Heading South

And we are on our way.

After spending most of the year in boatyards, it felt like a bit on an anticlimax to leave the marina and see Puerto Penasco recede into the distance. I blame our numbness on sheer exhaustion as we had spent interminable days working our way through the lists marked, ‘before departure’.

But with finally three window and portlights replaced, the new radar dome installed, decks washed and everything stowed, the last critical items had been ticked off and we were ready – even if we would arrive after dark at our first anchorage, a lonely seal island in the northern Sea of Cortez. Stocked up, watered up and with a radio checkout with the port captain we left in time to see sunset at sea.

Nico’s school had closed for the holidays a week or two ago, Christmas had come and gone, and there only remained a couple of days to make good ‘we’ll be on our way by the end of the year.’ We had made it!

Where to now? South is the short answer. South through the Midriff Islands, south down the coast of Baja California, south to Bahia Concepcion, Loreto, Agua Verde and La Paz, south to dive at Cabo Gato, south to Isla Isabella Reserve, south to Nayaarit and Mazatlan and then south across the Equator and to French Polynesia.
